Backwoods Provisions is a design, manufacture, and retail brand operating from our shop in Julian, California (of apple pie and gold mining fame) about an hour east of San Diego. 

Perched upon the Cuyamaca Mountains overlooking the very western reaches of the Sonoran Desert, our location truly inspires our affinity for the rustic, the old fashioned, a healthy respect for nature, and small town craftsmanship.    

Backwoods Provisions has roots going all the way back to about 1977 when The Warm Hearth, our original retail location, was started as a lumber and hardware store.  As the town began to grow crowded with tourists in more recent years, the shop slowly switched to selling gifts and home decor.  Today, The Warm Hearth offers a massive inventory of carefully curated goods.

After over 30 years in the retail industry and no small dose of frustration with cheaply made products and (dare we say it) consumerism as a whole, we decided to start Backwoods Provisions in the hopes of making our own goods, provide meaningful jobs, and who knows... maybe even inspire folks to get creative for themselves.
